If your tooth fractures, chips, or develops extensive decay, Dr. Lakota may suggest a crown, also called a cap. Crowns fit over a structurally compromised tooth to restore appearance, health, and strength.
What is a CEREC crown?
CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, allows Dr. Lakota to create custom porcelain crowns in a single visit. Each CEREC is custom designed, fabricated onsite, and placed – in one appointment.
How does CEREC work?
To create your CEREC crown, Dr. Lakota will dust a thin layer of reflective powder on your prepared tooth. With a special camera, he will take a picture to record the exact details of the tooth. The computer uses the data to design a crown that will precisely fit with your bite. Then, the CEREC milling unit will fabricate the restoration from a ceramic block carefully chosen to match your tooth enamel. Once the crown is ready, Dr. Lakota will bond it in place and make necessary adjustments.
Can I get a CEREC crown on any tooth?
Because CEREC restorations blend in with your natural smile, we select these crowns whenever possible. Depending on the location and amount of pressure the tooth sustains, Dr. Lakota may recommend a porcelain-fused-to-metal or gold crown. Back teeth must endure extreme pressure, and all-ceramic crowns are simply not durable enough to withstand the work.
