fillings, called composites, actually reinforce the tooth with their
bonding strength. This is a huge advantage over non-bonded amalgam, or "black
fillings". Wherever an amalgam is placed, the tooth is weakened. After
a while, the amalgams act as a wedge and results in cracking and fracturing
the tooth. The vast majorities of amalgam fillings we remove have decay
(cavity) underneath, as well as fracture lines in the dentin of the tooth.
For this reason, as well as the natural beauty restored, is the reason
we have chosen to be a mercury-free practice. Can composites be used
to replace all of my amalgam fillings? Not always. When the strength
of the tooth is compromised by fractures, decay, or large existing amalgams,
bonded porcelain will restore the tooth to it's natural strength and
beauty. Many of our guests choose porcelain to give them comfort and
peace-of-mind. Porcelain greatly lowers the risk of root canals and tooth
loss.
