Three out of four adults have some level of gum disease, and oral cancer strikes over 30,000 Americans each year. These statistics emphasize the importance of protecting your oral health. As a general dentist, Dr. Lakota takes this job seriously. He recommends checkups and cleanings twice a year and encourages effective daily home care to foster healthy teeth and gums. At your checkup, we will examine your whole mouth and perform a bite analysis, oral cancer screening, periodontal assessment, and tooth-by-tooth evaluation.

After age two and half, children can visit our office for regular checkups. An early childhood dental visit allows us to underscore the importance of brushing, flossing, and eating right. We will explain important tips and recommend products to you, the parent, and we’ll answer all of your questions. Dental sealants and fluoride supplements will prevent decay and keep your children’s teeth in good shape. We partner with parents and children for a head start on a lifelong, healthy smile.

Because Dr. Lakota has trained as an LVI dentist, he wants your smile to look fantastic and function properly. Broken teeth, severe decay, and missing teeth can compromise your appearance, quality of life, and oral health. The Naperville Smiles team will address the underlying cause of dental problems so that Dr. Lakota can present a treatment plan that will give you lasting results.

One primary concern is your occlusion, or bite, which refers to how upper and lower teeth fit together. When the bite is properly aligned, you won’t grind or clench teeth; your teeth will share the workload evenly; and you may find relief from TMJ-related pain, such as headaches and chronic earaches. Dr. Lakota designs crowns, fillings, and replacement teeth to correct or maintain a patient’s properly aligned bite.

If you suffer from a toothache, your tooth may be decayed, cracked, chipped, or internally infected. We offer a variety of restorative dental care procedures, including root canal therapy, white fillings, and CEREC one-visit crowns. To replace lost teeth, Dr. Lakota may recommend crown and bridgework, dentures, or dental implants. At your restorative consultation, Dr. Lakota will gather records, discuss your concerns, and explain his recommendations. Together, you’ll determine a treatment plan to meet your unique needs.

If you grind or clench your teeth, if your facial muscles are sore, or if your teeth are worn down, you may have developed TMJ dysfunction. Dr. Lakota studied neuromuscular dentistry and TMJ therapy at Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies. Often, he can alleviate these problems with non-surgical therapy to improve a patient’s quality of life.

What is Neuromuscular Dentistry?
Unlike traditional dental philosophies, neuromuscular dentistry addresses the position of the teeth and jaw, as well as the relationship with associated muscles and nerves.

Neuro = Nerve
Muscular = Muscles
Dentistry = Teeth
Neuromuscular Dentistry = Whole-Mouth Harmony

Signs of TMJ
The small, triangular joints that connect your jaw to your skull allow movement of your mouth. When these temporomandibular joints, or jaw joints, are misaligned, related muscles and nerves are put under significant stress, which leads to pain and other symptoms, such as:

  • Difficulty Biting or Chewing
  • Chronic Earaches
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches and/or Migraines
  • Clicking or Popping of the Jaw
  • Neck, Shoulder, Face, and Low Back Pain
  • Problems Swallowing
  • Tingling in the Extremities
  • Upper Body Stiffness

TMJ Treatment
As a neuromuscular dentist, Dr. Lakota offers conservative neuromuscular therapy for headache and migraine treatment. He trained at Las Vegas Institute and provides treatment to stabilize the bite, repair damage, and restore (or establish) whole-mouth harmony.

With specialized technology, Dr. Lakota will determine the optimal position for your jaw joints, which will correlate to establishing a proper bite. After your complete evaluation, the dentist will make recommendations for conservative TMJ treatment. Non-surgical TMJ, headache, and migraine treatment may involve rebuilding teeth with excessive wear, suggesting exercises to strengthen and de-stress your jaw muscles, or an oral appliance that prevent teeth grinding and keeps your jaw in the correct position.

An estimated 10 million Americans suffer from TMJ. Let Dr. Lakota give you a comfortable, healthy smile.
